3G Site Upgrades: Three UK hits 10,000 landmark

David Munro | 28 January 2010

Shooter's Hill - an area in the Borough of Greenwich, south-east London - achieved a little notoriety last week as in became Three Network's 10,000th 3G site, bringing Three's 3G coverage to nearly 93% of the UK population. 3 is currently undertaking a massive programme to extend and improve its 3G network, which it claims is already the UK's largest.

As just one of hundreds of sites connected this month alone, users in Shooters Hill will now enjoy improved 3G coverage, additional capacity and improved access to 3's mobile broadband. The ongoing expansion plans should see around 13,000 sites upgraded this year.

CTO at 3 UK, Graham Baxter said: 'Over the past two years the continued growth of internet communications, smartphone use and mobile broadband uptake have brought the need for good 3G network coverage into sharp focus for millions of consumers. Our network is already the biggest 3G network in the UK. Now we’re adding new coverage and capacity across the country to meet demand and bring the benefits of 3G to people who’ve never had access in their area before.'
