Our Samsung S5600 Review

Samsung S5600 Front

Design

The Samsung S5600 Preston stands out with its minimalist design, stylish curves, and compact size. It was pure joy for us to take the Samsung S5600 Preston between our hands and test it out as it fits the palm perfectly. Made from plastic, the Samsung S5600 Preston does not look tacky most handsets made from plastic, but rather looks high-end and sophisticated.

Screen

At 2.8 inches, the Samsung S5600 Preston’s touch screen is clutter-free. It dominates the front side of the handset with only three command keys at the bottom. The Samsung S5600 Preston boasts a TFT 16 million colours 240x320 resolution. The image quality is heavenly; the colours are bright and sizzling with energy. The screen is so responsive to your touch that you can accidently launch one of the applications.

User Interface

The Samsung S5600 Preston’s user interface is made with the user in mind. We felt impressed with its energetic, colourful menus for they are simple to navigate through. The home screen is widgetized like many of the touch screen handsets in the market. It provides application shortcuts for speedy launch and access.

Keypad

The touch screen is the sole method of communicating with the Samsung S5600 Preston handset. As we mentioned earlier, it is extra sensitive to the touch, so expect to hit wrong shortcuts here and there. It is also essential to lock the handset before putting in your pocket or you’ll be making international calls all day long. The on-screen QWERTY keyboard is generously spaced for the user to type with ease.

Camera and Multimedia

The Samsung S5600 Preston’s 3.2 megapixel camera outperforms many 5 megapixel cameras in the market. Equipped with LED flash, the camera delivers clarity in different lighting conditions. The secret is perhaps the LED flash that boosts the quality in poor-led areas. It comes with two great technologies: the smile detector and panorama. Similiar to Cybershot’s SmileShutter technology, the smile detector captures only a happy moment. You can easily switch to landscape or portrait mode with the built-in accelerometer or tag your photo’s with the geo-tagging technology. A supplementary camera is available for video-conferencing – a great addition for those telecommuting.

You cannot speak of Samsung’s headsets without delving into the world of multimedia. The Samsung S5600 Preston’s music player has great file support including: MP3, AAC, WMA, OGG, and AMR. Like most high-end handsets in the market, it features a categorized music library managed according to album, genre, artist, and playlist. Here’s what we really loved about Samsung S5600 Preston: you can keep your music player running in the background. This means you can easily surf the internet and enjoy your music. Heck, who needs a laptop now?

Connectivity and Battery Life

Samsung S5600 Preston’s connectivity is commendable with: EDGE, GPRS, 3G HSDPA, Bluetooth, and USB. Transferring and syncing files is a breeze with the Samsung S5600 Preston. Not to mention, you can easily run the 3G HSDPA at a 7.2 Mbps speed making your web surfing an experience to remember.

Battery life is currently considered average in the handset market. It is not a thing to be proud of, but for the features packed with the Samsung S5600 Preston’s, we’re willing to overlook battery life. Multimedia users should expect recharging their handset every 2 days.

What We liked

We liked the Samsung S5600 Preston for its stunning touch screen, stylish design, and great functionality.

What We disliked

We disliked the Samsung S5600 Preston for its poor camera quality.

Our Final Verdict

We found the Samsung S5600 Preston to be a small box of wonder: compact, light, and feature-packed. If you’re looking for a small phone to deliver great results at a superb price tag, Samsung S5600 Preston is your dream handset.
