Our Samsung Galaxy Ace Review

Samsung Galaxy S5830

Samsung introduces its most expensive smartphone with the exciting Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830. It out-paces forerunners with a higher screen resolution and a high powered processor. It has a sleek design. From a distance it may be hard to tell the Samsung Galaxy from its closest competitor – the iPhone. They are very similar in appearance. However, it is not always a bad thing to look like a proven winner and Samsung seems to be aware of this. With the Galaxy Ace, you can get a smartphone, iPhone look-a-like for less than half the price.

Design and Control

The Samsung Galaxy S5830 is equipped with standard control options. There is a right button and microSD, a MicroUSB, a great slot for memory cards. The front panel contains the home button. The screen comes with HGVA resolution and is top of the line. It has a speed demon of a CPU – 800 MHz. The 5 MP camera comes with a flash. There is a video option. The screen is bright and offers vivid colors. You get great viewing angles in all types of lighting. Sadly, Samsung did not include an ambient light sensor so you have to manually adjust the brightness of the screen. This takes some doing since you have access the settings menu and go from there. The touchscreen itself is capacitive – identifies even the smallest touch – and worked really well for us. Melding with the sounding surface is the proximity sensor above the display.

Three keys are located below the display. The back buttons and the button for the touch sensitive menu can be found on either side of the home key. You launch the search option by holding on the menu key making this a dedicated search key – right on the home screen. Switch tasks by pressing and holding the home key. On the left side of the smartphone is the volume control – easy to use and close to the phone. On the right side is the power/lock button placed high. The right is also home to the microSD slot covered by a plastic lid. On the top of the Samsung Galaxy is the USB port, also covered by a small plastic lid, and an audio jack. You can use the USB for a quick charge when needed.

The 5 MP camera with flash is located on the back of the phone. The loudspeaker is situated next to the camera. Just below the battery cover is the SIM card slot.

What We Liked

The Samsung S5830 is a great looking phone. We love that you can get a phone that looks like the iPhone for less than half the price. It has a classy appearance and offers excellent features – a touch sensitive screen, SD ports, and a camera flash.

What We Disliked

The big drawback to the phone is the poor video quality for anyone who likes to shoot lots of video. There is no support for Adobe Flash in the web browser and no ambient light sensor.

The Final Verdict

This phone is a steal. You get a great value, sleek appearance, and great smartphone options for a reasonable price. All of this comes with the reliable Samsung brand name. None of the drawbacks are deal killers for anyone looking for nice, mid-range smartphone.
