Our Nokia X3-02 Review

NokiaX3-02

Nokia is turning heads with the Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type. This new entry into the smartphone wars allows you to use the classic typing feature or the more modern touch screen option. Touch screens have been a huge drawback for many people – requiring a learning curve many were not willing to submit to – and Nokia is solving this problem with the X3-02.

Touch and Type

The Nokia X3-02 is not Nokia’s first foray into the touch and type smartphone market. The X3-02 Touch and Type is an advanced version of the Nokia C3-01. The C3-01 was the first Nokia model to offer touch and type. However, the X3-02 is a classier, more streamlined phone, indicative of the Nokia X line of phones. The phone has rounded curves contoured to fit your palm but the overall look is sleek and sharp. The keypad is four buttons wide, an unusual width for a smartphone or cell phone.

Design

The Nokia X3-02 is putting Nokia back in the smartphone running. It has recently suffered setbacks due to Apple and Android in the smartphone market. The X3-02, while not a high end smartphone, is a great midlevel option. The company is filling a huge need that was not being met with the more expensive smartphones. The X3-02 is a candy bar design and contains a 5 MP camera, 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, and quite a bit more. It is compact at 106.2 x 48.4 x 9.6mm with a weight of 78 grams. The touch screen has an excellent resolution of 240 x 320 pixels.

Interface and More

The Nokia X3-02 operates with the S40 UI. It is easy to use and includes graphics and other add -ons including the ability to support JAVA and the Ovi store. The smartphone has 50 MB of memory. It will support 32 GB with microSD memory cards. The phone includes normal connectivity options – GPRS, EDGE,3G HSDPA, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and Bluetooth 2.1. Connections with micros USB 2.0 are also available. Browsers including Opera can be installed and the phone comes with Twitter and Facebook apps already loaded. Chat apps - think eBuddy – can be found in the app store. The 5 MP camera tops off with a resolution of 2592 x 1944. Unfortunately, it does not include autofocus or a flash. The phone can record videos (18 FPS).

What We Liked

The Nokia X3-02 is a sleek phone that fits comfortably in your hand. It is offered at a great price point for consumers who do not want to spend the money for a high end smart phone. The camera has good resolution anf the web browser is fast. The phone has good music and offers a real find with the touch and type option.

What We Disliked

If you take a lot of photos with your smartphone you will miss the auto focus and flash options. We are not sure of the 4 button wide keyboard and do not know Nokia added it to this phone. The touch screen is somewhat resistive but you will adapt over time.

The Final Verdict

An excellent smartphone for the price. The Nokia X3-02 is a budget smartphone that does not look like a budget phone. It gives you many different options while keeping the price point low. The touch and type won us over. I don’t know how many time we have gotten complaints from people wanting a smartphone with a keyboard. Nokia solved this problem with this stylish phone. The drawbacks, such as the resistive screen and lack of flash and autofocus are minimal if you are using this as your main cell phone.
