Our Nokia 6700 Slide Review

You would certainly find it difficult to lose the Nokia 6700 Slide if you bought one – it comes in a range of bright, almost gaudy colours. Choose from aluminium, pink, petrol blue, red, lime or purple. While these options may not be to everyone’s taste, the handset is stylish enough for most.

At around £180, it’s at the lower end of the market. Another non-touchscreen phone from Nokia, this one doesn’t feature a high resolution screen or Wi-Fi. It’s basically intended for calling and texting with a few other uses besides. One of the benefits of traditional keyboard handsets is the much longer battery life compared to touchscreen and this is the cases with the Slide.

The slide supports the whole range of email platforms – Gmail, Exchange and Yahoo – but its fairly basic web browser is pretty slow for a later model. Of course, Nokia’s Ovi store is available, although a little limited compared to, say, Apple, but this feature is also too slow for some.

On the plus side, if you like that sort of thing, the Nokia 6700 Slide is small. It’s just 5.2mm x 46mm x 15.9mm, or 122mm tall with the slide open. Handy to slip in your pocket, but beware – the vibrating alert doesn’t have a lot of kick to it, so the thing might go unnoticed if someone’s calling you.

On the other hand, this emphasis on smallness means that the screen is small, too, and the resolution is just 320 x 240 pixels. Despite this, the display is crisp and was pretty legible out in the sunlight.

The Slide’s 5 megapixel camera features Carl Zeiss optics couple with an LED flash. This is coupled with a 640 x 480 pixel SVGA video camera on the front for two-way video calling. The camera on the Nokia 6700 Slide can’t be faulted for clarity and comes with plenty of options, both before and after shooting. The low-resolution screen was ideal for viewing, despite its small size. It comes with 45mb of storage, plus a 2Gb microSD included.

The music player, too is good. Not wonderful, but basic, like the rest of this handset’s features. They all work well, but don’t compare with flashier more expensive models on the market. But what do you expect for around £180? Overall, it doesn’t feel cheap, in looks, design or functions available, so you’d be more than getting your money’s worth.

What We Liked

The Nokia 6700 Slide is easy to navigate around, but then there’s not a whole lot to navigate. The display was clear and well-organized with all of Nokia’s usual functionality. And of course, navigation is easier and battery life longer than on a touchscreen.

What We Disliked

Unfortunately, the slowness of web browsing let the 6700 Slide down a bit. That said, it’s not the sort of phone designed for constant web browsing; it’s just an added extra. Web browsing is for computers, not tiny little phones.

Our Final Verdict

Solid, unflashy, calling and texting device. If you want to just text or call, you could buy a phone for next to nothing which does the same job, but using ther Nokia 6700 Slide is a pleasant experience.
