LG GW520

LG GW520

The built-in task manager application is one of the best we’ve come across in handsets. It enables you to run multiple applications in the background without affecting the handset’s performance.

Our LG GW520 Review

Design

We can’t help but think that the LG GW520 is yet another cool, minimalist handset in LG’s product line. This minimalist trend is currently dominating most handsets from iPhones to Blackberries and Skypephones. The LG GW520 stands out with its fresh aqua slide out keyboard and slick function buttons. The glossy black surface gives the LG GW520 an elegant touch that we’re used to with higher priced handsets.

GW520 Qwerty Keyboard

The finishing of the solid plastic build isn’t what we expected but it still looks good. The compact, durable build is complemented with a reliable slider action that’s smooth and easy to handle.

Screen

At 2.8 inches, the LG GW520’s touchscreen is colourful and fresh. We loved the fact that LG chose to include a capacitive screen as it responds better to touch – unlike many of LG’s resistive screens that take forever to get feedback from. The TFT display is saturated with colours sporting a high resolution and pixel density. On the downside, the screen is a fingerprint magnet – which isn’t great under direct sunlight where visibility is lowered with accumulated prints. The screen’s built-in accelerometer automatically switches between landscape and portrait modes when you rotate your phone.

User Interface

The LG GW520’s user interface is flash-based equipped with smooth animations and transition effects. This of course puts it in direct competition with the iPhone’s animations and usability. The touchscreen’s responsiveness makes the user interface even better. Sporting two widget-based homescreens that help you access your favourite applications rapidly. We were disappointed by the lack of a proper editing mode for the widgets. While you can edit which widgets show, you cannot add widgets of your own. We simply had to live with the preset widgets such as: WeatherBug, Facebook, clock, FM radio, music player, image slideshow, and calendar.

The built-in task manager application is one of the best we’ve come across in handsets. It enables you to run multiple applications in the background without affecting the handset’s performance. Overall, the user interface is one of the friendliest we’ve seen on touchscreen handsets.

Keypad

Moving on to the keypad, we were glad to find that the slide-out QWERTY keyboard is built with special ergonomics. We found typing to be quite relaxing as the keys are appropriately spaced out. The accelerometer automatically rotates the display when you slide out the QWERTY keyboard, thus enhancing the user experience. We loved typing in messages as the LG GW520 boasts a quality keypad resistant to everyday dust and dirt. The on-screen alphanumeric keypad is a neat addition for those more keen on using the touchscreen.

Camera and Multimedia

In the multimedia department, the LG GW520 competes fiercely both with other high-end LG handsets and the Sony Ericsson Walkman series. The music and video playback are commendable. The music player plays music in the background without loading the handset. Moreover, the album art visualization and equalizers make the LG GW520’s music player a neat feature. We loved the mini music player widget on the homescreen as it made our lives so much easier.

The LG GW520’s 3 megapixel camera packs serious resolution and image quality. The camera delivers amazing day photos. At night; however; do not expect to get anything out of the LG GW520’s camera – as it has no built-in flash. The camera’s interface is standard like the one we’ve seen on the LG Renoir. It offers great controls that you can access and learn without trouble.

Connectivity and Battery Life

The LG GW520 follows up nicely with the market’s connectivity needs. Sporting a 3G HSDPA, A2DP Bluetooth, EDGE, and USB 2.0, the LG GW520 works great for anyone keen on web browsing. We loved surfing the internet as pages load in a jiffy and don’t freeze up when scrolling down. Setting your email account is so easy with the LG GW520, since the handset automatically retrieves the setup details. All you have to do is fill in your username and password.

The LG GW520’s battery life fits its feature-packed build. We were glad to know that the LG GW520’s battery lasted for the whole duration of our exhaustive test from audio and video playback to web surfing and data transfer.

What We Liked

We liked the LG GW520’s chic design, widgetized homescreen, and great multimedia factory.

What We Disliked

The LG GW520’s glossy screen and inability to add widgets to the homescreen.

Our Final Verdict

The LG GW520 is an impressive handset with a refreshing design and solid performance. Its diverse features make it attractive for people from all walks of life. We recommend this handset to anyone looking for a reliable, modern handset that excels.
