Our Blackberry Bold 9900 Review

Blackberry Bold 9900

The Blackberry Bold 9900 is like John Travolta as the dancer Tony finally getting the attention he deserves in the movie Staying Alive. Blackberry has never been known as the front runner in the smartphone market, but the Blackberry Bold 9900 feels like RIM decided to finally give its phone design a big shove onto the dance floor where it can perform remarkable moves under the mirrored ball. Usually the Blackberry is the student and not the dance instructor, but the Blackberry 9900 takes the lead this time with the reliable OS7, the HD video camera and a high-spec touchscreen. It also has a 1.2GHz processor offering plenty of speed to the neediest Blackberry fan.

Also, this phone boasts Near Field Communication available with certain carriers. NFC enables you to quickly connect with other NFC phones or through smart tags.

Go Ahead and Push My Buttons

The buttons on one side of the edge band show great design work. There are 3 buttons for managing volume so you don’t have to search the screen and 1 button that serves as a shortcut for snapping pictures with the built-in camera. On the other side of the edge band, there are ports for micro USB charging and syncing, and a headphone jack. On top there’s a lock button. The buttons are placed to make feature use possible with bare movement of the fingers.

What We Liked

There’s lots to like about the Blackberry Bold 9900. This phone line has always had excellent email and security features and that has not changed with the introduction of the 9900. Though it’s heavier than many of its competitors at 130g, the weight is actually a selling point for many people. Lightweight is not always the right choice for those with bumbling fingers or use the weight to heighten awareness of the phone in the pocket or handbag. Some of the extra weight comes from the bigger size compared to the Blackberry 9780. However, the phone is not overweight and is slim making a great design combination.

Other features of note include 8GB of memory and the amazingly sharp touchscreen. The 2.8 inches of screen has 640 X 480 pixels. The text and pictures are sharp and it would be surprising if anyone had a complaint about the touchscreen.

Finally, the QWERTY keyboard remains topnotch with its shortcuts. You can tap out a 6 paragraph email with ease, and you can’t really say that about many (if any) smartphones.

What We Disliked

There are still a few features that Rim needs to add to make the Blackberry 9900 an even better dancer. For example, the memory card is not hot swappable. In addition, the main buttons located right under the touchscreen require finger lifting to go from one to the other. These buttons include menu, call, back and end call. It would be easier if you could just slide your finger to the right button.

Our Final Verdict

The thin classy Blackberry Bold 9900 is elegant looking and is well on its way to being a winner at the cell phone dance. It comes loaded with pre-installed apps for weather, travel, shopping and much more so you are off and running as soon as you begin using the phone. The BlackBerry® 7 Operating System is state-of-the-art and offers speed and reliability. You’ll be saying, “Can I have the next dance?”
