Our Apple iPhone 3GS Review

Apple’s latest iPhone model, the 3GS (with the ‘S’ standing for speed) is not recognisably different from its predecessor. To all intents and purposes, it’s the same phone in the same clothing. But that’s not such a bad thing, as previous iPhones were pretty remarkable to begin with.

There are, however a lot of improvements over the original iPhone, most significantly the improved processor and RAM which has doubled from 128mb to 256mb. Storage options are either 16Gb or a huge 32Gb.

So what the iPhone 3GS does is what its predecessor did, but a lot faster. Its release coincides with the release of Apple’s latest operating system, OS 3.0. There’s also a new internal compass, which works brilliantly in tandem with Google Maps, improved camera and faster landscape/portrait rotation. Also here for the first time is the invaluable Spotlight function, allowing quick and easy searches of the iPhones files, folders, pictures and apps.

The camera has been upgraded, but not by much – up from 2 megapixels to 3 megapixels. However, this can be enough when coupled with the extremely useful autofocus software, which focuses in depending on where you tap.

Which brings us to the impressive video recording and editing capabilities on offer here. With 30fps VGA video, the results are great in raw form. Things start to look even better when using the editing function, a lite version of the iMovie application to be found on Apple Mac computers. Unfortunately, the editing process is destructive, but it’s only a fun accessory, after all. If you really want to be up for next year’s Oscars, you’ll want to use better equipment than a phone, no matter how clear and smooth its results.

Apple have also finally introduced a cut, copy and paste text facility. Like predictive texting, you tap on the screen and the iPhone uses its intuition to work out the section you are trying to choose. This works surprisingly well. Another tap and you can paste back into another document. To undo the action, simply shake the phone, although this may baffle onlookers. It’s not only text that can be copied. Web pages and other chunks of media can all be relocated easily.

Another welcome addition may seem a small thing but it’s important – the landscape keyboard, which more or less doubles the size of the QWERTY keys in portrait mode. It’s only when you use it that you realise how fiddly a portrait keyboard can be.

This is just another example of the thought that has gone into this, indeed most Apple products. It’s only to be hoped that the next addition to the series looks a little different, too.

What We Liked

There’s so much improvement inside that Apple are to be congratulated on improving so much and living up to their word – the ‘S’ really does stand for speed.

What We Disliked

Although the improvements and upgrades are welcome, there’s not much here that will convince anyone who didn’t want one before would want one now.

Our Final Verdict

Maybe there’s not enough here for owners of the previous 3G to fork out for something which is an improvement on an already well-respected product. But new iPhone users should jump in now.
